Language:Language in a walkthrough
.
Sometimes learners need orientating towards a language activity before they are introduced to a game. The dictation below not only provides useful language but helps set up the language activity and provide language support. The dictation below should be dictated in chunks and delivered in natural speech. i.e. allow pauses between the '/' and with connected speech elements. You should repeat any of the chunks that your learners ask you to and spell any words your learners ask you to. After each sentence ask your learners to compare their sentence with a partner. As a quick check you can ask them "Any questions about that sentence?" or "How many words has your sentence got?". The number of words in each sentence is written after each sentence and should not be dictated.
Dictation
1 Open up three / internet explorer windows. (6)
2 In the first window / type in / 'kyle mawer wiki'. (9)
3 Click on the first link / which has got / home in the title. (12)
4 Find the picture / with index written above it / and click on that word. (13)
5 Find Samorost / in the list / and click on it. (9)
6 Cut and paste the address / into the second window. (9)
7 Play the game / in the first window / and play the first walkthrough / in the second window. (16)
8 In the third window / find an online dictionary. (8)
In pairs learners should tell their partner what they have to do. Monitor and check they know that they need to open three internet explorer windows and listen to check they know what each window is for. Feedback in open class.
Play
Learners go to the computer room and using the instructions play the game. Point out that they use the walkthrough or game 'instructions' to complete the game and the online dictionary to help them with any difficult language. Most language problems lie in learners comprehension of the nouns
Optional extra activity
- Learners look at their dictation and underline / highlight words connected with internet exploring.
- Learners use their dictation at home to finish the game.
NOTE Most learners' language problems lie in their comprehension of the nouns in the walkthrough. Instead of an online dictionary in the third window learners could use an internet explorer to look for images of the vocabulary (e.g. google images). If you do use this method then make sure that the safe or strict filter in the advanced search option is enabled. Either instruct your learners how to do this, do it yourself or get some IT support.
