Level: Intermediate / Upper intermediate
Location: Computer room
Activity: Listening
Language: "What's a _____?", "Where is the _______?", "How do you______?"
Learners either work individually or in pairs and play the game by listening to the teacher who uses a copy of the walkthrough to guide learners through the game. The teacher's copy of the walkthrough may be an electronic copy or a printed copy that they have downloaded. Learners are encouraged to ask questions to clarify how they should proceed in the game and negotiate the meaning of difficult language items with the teacher.
e.g.
(screen 1)
Teacher: "Ok you need to get the dog out from his kennel".
Learner: "What's a kennel?"
Teacher: "It's like a house for a dog to live in."
(screen 2)
Teacher: "Ok! What's happened?
Learner: " I'm trapped."
Teacher: "In the rocket?"
Learner: "No. I'm in a tree. How do I get down from the tree?"
Teacher: "You need to find a small creature in one of the trees and drag it across and put it on your tree just above your head."
Learner: "What do I do now?"
Teacher: "What have you done/ Where are you?)
Learner: "I've got down from the tree and I'm standing at the bottom of it."
Teacher: "Ok! You need to walk right across the screen to the left and you do that by clicking on the little white arrow that appears on the far left by the tree there."
Try and avoid the word 'click' as much as possible and only use it when no other verb seems appropriate or natural. Note that the walkthrough overuses it and you should be monitoring the game on the screens to help you avoid repetitive language from the walkthrough. Monitor other screens and if other learners understand your instructions more easily then ask them to help you explaining to other learners how to proceed in the game.
