Ransom NoteThis is a featured page

Level: Intermediate
Location: Classroom
Activity: Writing
Language: 1st conditional

Introduction
This is similar to the game of consequences. This activity requires no other technology other than a pen and a blank piece of paper for each learner although learners should be a little familiar with the story of Samorost. That is, that it is the story of 'gnome' whose dog has been kidnapped by aliens. If necessary play the first sequence of the game (you just need to watch the intro, click on the kennel and then watch the next video sequence of the game).

Activity
Ask your learners why the aliens may have kidnapped the dog and write them onto the board. When a learner suggests for money write ransom on the board and explain to the class they are going to write the ransom note. Tell them to get a piece of paper and pen or pencil ready. Tell them that you will dictate some parts of the ransom note, ask them to complete a little more, fold the paper (so what they have written is hidden) and pass it to the next person on their left. Give the following instructions (dictation is in "italics").

1) "Dear" and write the name of the person they are writing to. Fold and pass to the left.
2) "We have kidnapped your dog" and write the name of the dog. Fold and pass to the left.
3) "We want" Write what the kidnappers want. Fold and pass to the left.
4) "Deliver it to". Write where they want the ransom delivered. Fold and pass to the left.
5) "If we see any intergalactic police " Write what will happen. Fold and pass to the left.
6) "If you don't deliver the ransom" Write what will happen. Fold and pass to the left.
7) "We are the ADKL" Write what the initials stand for. Fold and pass to the left.
8) "We believe in " write what the alien group believes in.
9) "That is why" Complete the sentence. Fold and pass to the left.
10) Invent the last sentence yourself. Fold and pass to the left.

Learners can now open their ransom note and read it to their partner or small group and decide which is the best.
